A short story by Amy

Sally the Trouble Maker
By Amy

Once upon a time there was a little girl called Sally. Sally was a huge trouble maker. She would always get in trouble at home and at school. This was because she hated her teacher Miss Brodie and her teacher hated her, and she got in trouble at home because she did what she wanted to do and she didn’t listen.

One day Sally did something really naughty. She threw a basketball at Miss Brodie. Sally got in so much trouble; Miss Brodie arranged a meeting with Sally’s mother. Miss Brodie asked Sally’s mother if Sally could move to a different class because she was causing too much trouble.

Straight away Sally’s mother replied “No way, if my child bothers you why don’t you move to a different class and you just don’t want to deal with my daughter.”

Miss Brodie didn’t agree with what Sally’s mother said and she got really annoyed. She got so annoyed that she started a fight. Sally’s mother wished she had never said what she said because Miss Brodie threw punches and she screeched and roared every word she said.

After a few minutes the principle heard the noise and hurried down to Miss Brodie’s room.

“What is going on in here” shouted the principle.
“Well that mother told me to move to a different class or to deal with her child” replied Miss Brodie.
“Well that mother is right because if you dislike the children in your class, you shouldn’t be a teacher” bellowed the principle.
“Are you saying what I think you are saying” yelled Miss Brodie.
“I sure am. You are fired.”

procedural writing in action

In Room 2 we have been studying procedural writing. We wrote recipes using language features specific to procedural text. We included a purpose, ingredients list, method, with individual steps in chronological order and used active verbs. Upon completion we had the opportunity to make our fruit concoctions / smoothies. It was a really successful afternoon of fun learning and a good opportunity to work cooperatively with our class mates.

Please enjoy these photos.

Netsafe - Keeping Safe on the Internet

Hi everyone, I thought I would put on the blog the websites and information that was in the newsletter on the 3rd of September. These sites are very informative and the tips about reading the terms and conditions is extremely helpful. Hope this is useful. Miss J.

Two useful websites to help us are http://www.netsafe.org.nz/ and
http://www.thecybersafetylady.com.au/ and below is some useful tips:-
1) How to keep your kids safe on Minecraft:
 http://thecybersafetylady.com.au/2014/08/a-parents-guide-to-minecraft/
2) If your child wants to register for an online game, check the Terms & Conditions for the age
limitation first. When you are reading the Terms & Conditions you can do a search using
Ctrl F on a Windows laptop or Command F on a MAC laptop to find ‘age’ or ‘limitations’.
3) Talk to your child about what makes a good digital citizen. The same core values apply
online. So for example “respect each other”, add the word “online”.
4) Videos/Quizzes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79IYZVYIVLA This is a video which
goes through what a person's dossier looks like throughout the entire life starting in the
womb! Digital footprint https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DinW62zlWcc. We like to
talk about our digital footprint as our ‘digital tattoo’.
This is a great “How Cyber Smart Are You?” quiz
http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/Home/Kids/Have%20Fun/How%20cybersmart%20are%20you.a

5) This is a website which talks about the importance of having breaks and some suggested
 exercises to do http://web.stanford.edu/dept/EHS/prod/general/ergo/microbreaks.html

Experiment day in Room 2

Today (Monday 1st September) we are all doing our science experiments. We have to teach the people in our group (3 others) how to do your experiment and then we have to assess our students to know if they have learned anything or listened. We come up with our own assessment methods.

My (Joseph) experiment is about how to make glowing Oobleck. Through the process of doing my experiment, I realised I only had Wheat Starch. I used it and it works. Usually we would use Corn Starch but it looks like any type of Starch works.

Ways a parent can help with Math

  • Look for patterns and shapes in real life
  • Have your child measure ingredients for a recipe you are making
  • Ask your child to explain the math skills he or she is learning in school
  • When helping students with homework or school assignments, ask your child to explain how he or she got an answer
  • Allow students to play math games on the computer
  • Play card games or board games that involve counting or patterns
  • Have your child count down the time (weeks, days and/or hours) to a special day or holiday
  • Ask your child to count the change at the grocery store, or to estimate the total cost while you are shopping
  • Encourage your child to track or graph scores or stats for a favorite sports team
  • Make comparisons: Which thing is the tallest? the heaviest? the longest? the smallest? the most expensive? the hottest? the most expensive?
  • Provide flash cards (or help your child make some) to practice math facts
  • Have tools such as a ruler, a scale, a calculator, and a measuring tape in your house
  • - See more at: http://www.fortheteachers.org/parent_involvement.htm#ParentReading

Ways a parent can help with Reading

  • Read out loud to your child – books, newspaper articles, recipes, billboards and signs – anything!
  • Let your child see you reading
  • Ask your child about the books he or she is reading at school
  • When reading a story with your child, ask him or her what he or she thinks will happen next
  • After reading a story with your child, ask him or her to make up a different ending or to guess what would happen to the characters after the story is over
  • Visit your public library regularly
  • Set aside a time and place for your child to read – possibly a comfortable chair or a reading light for bedtime stories
  • Encourage your child to write letters to family and friends, such as thank you notes
  • Have a dictionary in your house and help your child look up new words he or she reads in a book or hears on T.V.
  • Ask your child questions about what he or she is reading, such as…
    • What is the story about?
    • Who are the important characters in the story?
    • Where does the story take place?
    • Why did that happen?
    • How did you know about that?
    • Why do you think the character made that choice?
    • How is this book alike or different from the last book you read?
    • Would you recommend this book to others to read? Why or why not?
  • Read mysteries with your child and help him or her to figure out the clues
  • Provide crossword puzzles, word searches and other word puzzles, or help your child to make up his or her own puzzles with words
  • Give your child a notebook, diary, or journal where he or she can write about family events, trips, or what happens in his or her daily life
  • Have books and magazines in your home
  • Allow your child to play appropriate reading and word games on the computer
  • Ask your child to draw a picture that shows what is happening in a story
  • Provide scrap paper, pencils, pens, markers and crayons
  • Read poems and nursery rhymes out loud
  • With younger children, make a game out of finding words that rhyme or words that start with the same letter or sound
  • Look for after-school and summer reading programs at your school or library

    Dioramas with Mrs Wallace

In Room 2 we have been making dioramas with Mrs Wallace. We’re making dioramas because in inquiry we are working on what is a culture. We had to read a myth about our culture, then we chose a scene and made the diorama. We have had a lot of fun making them. Here are some photos of us painting them. P1060287.JPGP1060293.JPG

After we painted the boxes we got on with the scenery.

    Art with Miss S
Miss S did art with us. We drew lizards. The picture of the lizard was cut up into pieces. We all got one peice of 1 lizzard. We then had to sketch it onto a white piece of paper the same size. Then we used different mediums to colour. We used pastels, crayons and colouring pencils. The final designs are awesome and are on display in Room 2.

    Literacy Week

    Literacy week
In term 2 the whole school had a literacy week. After morning tea a different teacher would come and read us a story for 20 minutes then we went swapped classes and did some literacy activities. In Mrs Knoflocks room we made cute little bookmarks that eat the corner of your page. We also made punga people I called my Pompalompa. Only those who finished their book mark could make one. They are up on display in our room.
Then we went to Miss Coffers we made poems from the book Cat in the Hat then we published them onto two card pieces of paper. Once we finished we put newspaper in the middle to make it 3D.
On the next day we went to Mr Mac’s class and did some things about angry birds. First we extended our vocabulary using big describing the birds of their personality. Next Mr Mac put us in groups of three and gave us a bird.
Then on Friday Morning we came to school dressed as a book character. We had a parade at 9:15. The parade was about 1 hour then at 11:25 as per usual we went to Mr MacCarthy Morrogh. He did some art work with letters of the alphabet. I got given the letter U. You had to come up with a verb that starts with the letter.

    Senior School Hangi

    Senior Syndicate Hangi

On the 19th of June the whole senior school participated on eating a hangi. There was 5 stations. Station 1 was the cabbage and pumpkin, station 2 was kumera, station 3 was potatoes, station 4 was the chicken and last but not least was station 5, the wrapping. After our meal had been wrapped we brought our food into the kitchen and Mr Mac and some students put it in the fridge, chilli bins or the staff room fridge.
The next day we had to be at school at 7.45am to put our food in the kai cookers. We gave our meal to Mr Mac and he stacked our little containers.
Around 1.30 our meal was ready to eat. The teachers were yelling out our names and handing out meals to us. This was my first hangi ever and it was so good.
I loved the hangi and I bet everyone else did is well.

Dance in Room 2 with Miss S

Miss S got Room 2 to create a dance based on Maui and the Goddess of Fire. They had to use elements of dance such as pathways, levels, isolation's, shapes and a mixture of locomotion and non-locomotive movements. Please ask your children what these mean, or ask them to show you the movements.
    Hope you enjoy the video.
