Commonwealth games inquiry homework

Hi everyone, Room 2 is learning about the Commonwealth Games. The history, and coming up with an understanding of What is the Commonwealth Games. Please help your children with research on answering the questions that are in their Google Docs. They can also come up with their own questions as well.

Also we will be looking into the history of the Maori Culture to follow up on our culture inquiry from last term. Please also help with their research on this. Thanks. Miss J.

Ways a parent can help with Math

  • Look for patterns and shapes in real life
  • Have your child measure ingredients for a recipe you are making
  • Ask your child to explain the math skills he or she is learning in school
  • When helping students with homework or school assignments, ask your child to explain how he or she got an answer
  • Allow students to play math games on the computer
  • Play card games or board games that involve counting or patterns
  • Have your child count down the time (weeks, days and/or hours) to a special day or holiday
  • Ask your child to count the change at the grocery store, or to estimate the total cost while you are shopping
  • Encourage your child to track or graph scores or stats for a favorite sports team
  • Make comparisons: Which thing is the tallest? the heaviest? the longest? the smallest? the most expensive? the hottest? the most expensive?
  • Provide flash cards (or help your child make some) to practice math facts
  • Have tools such as a ruler, a scale, a calculator, and a measuring tape in your house

    Ways a parent can help with Reading

  • Read out loud to your child – books, newspaper articles, recipes, billboards and signs – anything!
  • Let your child see you reading
  • Ask your child about the books he or she is reading at school
  • When reading a story with your child, ask him or her what he or she thinks will happen next
  • After reading a story with your child, ask him or her to make up a different ending or to guess what would happen to the characters after the story is over
  • Visit your public library regularly
  • Set aside a time and place for your child to read – possibly a comfortable chair or a reading light for bedtime stories
  • Encourage your child to write letters to family and friends, such as thank you notes
  • Have a dictionary in your house and help your child look up new words he or she reads in a book or hears on T.V.
  • Ask your child questions about what he or she is reading, such as…
    • What is the story about?
    • Who are the important characters in the story?
    • Where does the story take place?
    • Why did that happen?
    • How did you know about that?
    • Why do you think the character made that choice?
    • How is this book alike or different from the last book you read?
    • Would you recommend this book to others to read? Why or why not?
  • Read mysteries with your child and help him or her to figure out the clues
  • Provide crossword puzzles, word searches and other word puzzles, or help your child to make up his or her own puzzles with words
  • Give your child a notebook, diary, or journal where he or she can write about family events, trips, or what happens in his or her daily life
  • Have books and magazines in your home
  • Allow your child to play appropriate reading and word games on the computer
  • Ask your child to draw a picture that shows what is happening in a story
  • Provide scrap paper, pencils, pens, markers and crayons
  • Read poems and nursery rhymes out loud
  • With younger children, make a game out of finding words that rhyme or words that start with the same letter or sound
  • Look for after-school and summer reading programs at your school or library

    Dioramas with Mrs Wallace

    In Room 2 we have been making dioramas with Mrs Wallace.We’re making dioramas because in inquiry we are working on what is a culture. We had to read a myth about our culture, then we chose a scene and made the diorama. We have had a lot of fun making them. Here are some photos of us painting them. P1060287.JPGP1060293.JPG

    Lizard Art

    Art with Miss S
    Miss S did art with us. We drew lizards. The picture of the lizard was cut up into pieces. We all got one peice of 1 lizzard. We then had to sketch it onto a white piece of paper the same size.Then we used different mediums to colour. We used pastels,crayons and colouring pencils. The final designs are awesome and are on display in Room 2.

    Literacy Week

    Literacy week
    In term 2 the whole school had a literacy week. After morning tea a different teacher would come and read us a story for 20 minutes then we went swapped classes and did some literacy activities. In Mrs Knoflocks room we made cute little bookmarks that eat the corner of your page. We also made punga people I called my Pompalompa. Only those who finished their book mark could make one. They are up on display in our room.
    Then we went to Miss Coffers we made poems from the book Cat in the Hat then we published them onto two card pieces of paper. Once we finished we put newspaper in the middle to make it 3D.
    On the next day we went to Mr Mac’s class and did some things about angry birds. First we extended our vocabulary using big describing the birds of their personality. Next Mr Mac put us in groups of three and gave us a bird.
    Then on Friday Morning we came to school dressed as a book character. We had a parade at 9:15. The parade was about 1 hour then at 11:25 as per usual we went to Mr MacCarthy Morrogh. He did some art work with letters of the alphabet. I got given the letter U. You had to come up with a verb that starts with the letter.

    Goodbye Miss Schellingerhout

    In Room 2 recently we had a student teacher. She was cool,awesome,spectacular,amazing,funny and entertaining. Miss schellingerhout was a very big help in room 2. She taught us some new games and she helped with our learning. Miss schellingerhout was with us for 5 weeks.
    Personally we think that student teachers are awesome we are really hoping that we can get another student teacher soon.
